Maggots
riddling the corpse
bring with their frenzied activity
a semblance of returning life
small pickings remain
although the vultures have already fed
first stripping the sweet fat
then the jewelled eyes the tongue
the heart dung beetles
work the excrement
Men in suits - dispassionate
observe - confer - prognosticate
how much longer before the bones are clean
shining clean whitely clean
ready to be re-assembled wired together
clad in scarecrow's raiment
and stationed against the dividing fence
as a warning
